How It Works

How does the testing process work?

How long your consultation takes depends on the tests you pick and the questions you want to chat about with our counselor. Usually, the whole visit takes about 60 minutes.

You can get tested for HIV with us. We offer a rapid HIV test, and you'll get your results from us after just 20 minutes.

For syphilis and Hepatitis C, we offer lab tests. We'll need a bit of blood from your veins for this and send the sample to Dr. Risch's lab. You'll get the results via SMS within two to four working days.

The test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea is done with a swab. The swab is sent to Dr. Risch's lab for analysis. You'll get the results via SMS within two to four days.

1
When you arrive, our intake team will greet you at the reception. We'll ask for your mobile number, which you can type into a screen. Don't worry, we can't see your actual number; it's turned into a special, unique code. This code helps us keep you anonymous and lets us give you info about your tests and results even after your chat. Our intake team will also ask for a few quick details: the canton you live in, the first two numbers of your postcode, your birth year, and what language you prefer.
2
You will then be asked to scan a QR code with your cell phone. This will take you to an anonymous questionnaire. We can also give you an iPad, which you can use to complete the anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire takes about 5-10 minutes to complete and serves as an overview for the consultation. Your statements cannot be traced back to you.
3
In the waiting room, you can take your time to fill out the anonymous questionnaire, and then a counsellor will come to get you. The counsellor is professional and non-judgmental. You can openly talk about your concerns, fears, and questions. To best understand your situation, the counsellor will need some information.
4
During your consultation, you'll get a test recommendation. You can then decide for yourself which tests you'd like to do. If you choose to get tested, we'll take a small blood sample. This blood can be used for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C tests.
5
If you've had a rapid HIV test, a counselor will pick you up from the waiting room after the 20-minute wait. They'll tell you your results, and you'll have a chance to ask any other questions. You can give any swab tubes to the counselor. If you only opted for a syphilis and/or hepatitis C lab test, your consultation is done. You can hand in any swab tubes at the intake desk. You'll get your results in two to four business days.

Did you have an HIV risk?

You can stop an HIV infection if you start emergency treatment (called PEP) right away. But after 48 hours from the risky situation, PEP won't work anymore. If you need PEP, get in touch with Checkpoint Zurich or go to a hospital emergency room.
