What is an HIV test?
The HIV test that we offer at TEST-IN is a 4th generation rapid test (DETERMINE™ HIV screening test). This test detects:
- p24 antigen (a component of the virus that appears early in the blood)
- Antibodies against HIV
The result is available after just 20 minutes. This makes this test ideal for fast and reliable screening directly on site.
When is the test useful?
- The HIV test is reliable from 6 weeks after a risk situation.
- An earlier test is possible, but does not provide definitive certainty, as the virus may not yet be detectable in the first few weeks.
- If the test is carried out before the end of the 6 weeks, it must therefore be repeated after 6 weeks in order to obtain a reliable result.
How does the test work?
- A small blood sample is taken - either from the fingertip or from the vein.
- This sample is immediately analyzed with the test.
- The result is available after 20 minutes.
What does the result mean?
- Negative: If neither p24 antigen nor HIV antibodies are found and the risk situation occurred at least 6 weeks ago, the result is considered HIV-negative.
- Reactive/positive: If the result is reactive, this does not automatically mean an infection. In this case, a confirmatory test in the laboratory is always required, as false-positive results can occur. An HIV diagnosis is only made if this test is also positive.
Advice and support
We will not leave you alone with the test result:
- Before and after the test, you will receive advice from us and can ask any questions you may have.
- If you wish, you can have a confirmation issued in your name in the event of a negative test.
- If a positive result is confirmed, a referral is made to specialized doctors.
Why is the test important?
- Early diagnosis enables rapid treatment that suppresses the virus and enables a healthy life.
- At the same time, timely treatment also protects others, as the virus is no longer transmissible after successful treatment.
